Small to medium-sized home gardens require tools of just the right size—portable, lightweight, easy to maintain, easy on the environment, and easy on the pocket, too. I was almost convinced about using the traditional rake and hoe for garden maintenance until I remembered another important factor when it comes to picking the best cultivator tool: time-saving.

If I had the Greenworks 27062 Cordless Cultivator, I would have saved not only myself (from backaches), and the environment (from gas emissions), but also time for more of what I love—planting and watching my greens grow.

1. Things To Note Before Buying A Cultivator

Garden maintenance includes cultivation, and cultivators come in many forms and sizes. There are power cultivators—those that require either fuel or electricity to run, and there are the basic hand tools—those that are only manually operated.

But, as I’ve mentioned, I’d like to save time whenever I conduct my routinary maintenance tasks. This means I need to have a powered cultivator to allow me to multiply energy input and accomplish more within only a few hours.

Power Cultivators

For power cultivators, I got two options: gas-powered or electric. Of the two, I prefer electric cultivators more. Needless to say, they’re more environment-friendly.

Now, among electric cultivators, my options boil down to either corded or cordless, i.e., battery-powered cultivators. In this review, I’m dealing with a battery-operated one.

I’d like to affirm that people have the following reasons for picking a cordless electric cultivator. Now if the list of reasons below resonate with what you’re looking for, then you’re probably on the right page.

With cordless cultivators:

• No cords that get tangled.
• The length of the cord doesn’t limit where you want to till.
• No need for an extension cord.
• You can have spare batteries in case of blackouts.
• No fuel, gas and oil mixes.

If, however, you’re looking for a machine meant for heavy-duty tilling, the right tool for you comes either with an electric cord or a motor that is fueled by gas.

Tiller vs. Cultivator

Thus far, I have safely been interchanging the terms “tiller” and “cultivator”, but they actually do two different jobs. Before proceeding any further into the review, it is important to note the difference.

• A tiller should be more heavy-duty. It is meant to initially prepare the ground for planting.
• A cultivator digs a little less deep. It is designed to disturb the soil just enough to aerate it and easily pull out unwanted weeds, but not harm the roots of your beloved plants. In short, it’s for garden maintenance.

Now some tools interchange the names, claiming both uses. These machines may have the capacity to do both tilling and cultivating, but it’s important to look at the specs to see if that’s exactly the case. In this review, we’re only focusing on garden maintenance, which is why we’re picking what could promisingly be the best cordless cultivator.

What To Look For In A Cordless Cultivator

Here’s what you need to take note of when looking for a battery-powered cultivator.

• Battery Type: Lithium-Ion. It’s the type of battery with no memory effect, powering current smartphones. It’s capable of fast-charging (although as for the battery that comes with your unit, fast-charging capability depends on how it was engineered).
• Battery Capacity: 40V. For most home gardening needs, a 40V-max battery would be just right. For longer-lasting power, check the capacity in Amp-hours. It’s roughly the current the battery can deliver in an hour. Again, using the smartphone analogy, your 3000 mAh-battery can last long—but as to how long? Well, it depends on how much work you demand from it, i.e., how many apps you run. Meanwhile, the higher the voltage and the capacity, the greater the energy potential.
• Handles. Look for ergonomic, non-slip or cushioned grip types.
• Tilling Width. It should depend on how large or small your garden is. For a garden less than 500 sq.ft, you may go for a cultivator with 6” to16” of tilling width.
• Tilling Depth. Cultivators are, again, not meant for tilling never-before-tilled soil. For a small garden, a cultivator with 3” to 6” of tilling depth may suffice.

2. Consider the Greenworks 27062 Cordless Cultivator with 40V Battery

The Greenworks 27062 Cordless Cultivator is a member of a family of battery-powered gardening tools by the company, Greenworks. The model no. 27062 already includes the battery and charger in the package. Along with the tool itself, the combo only costs a little like a corded lawn mower (Greenworks 12-Amp Corded Lawn Mower).

Since the Greenworks 40V 4Ah Cordless Cultivator uses a G-Max battery, Greenworks users can already save a lot with the tool-only offer. If you already have Greenworks tools that came with G-Max 40V systems, you may purchase the 27062A Cultivator to save a few more bucks. You can just use your old G-Max battery and the cultivator would be up for your gardening challenge.

Again, as the 27062 is a cultivator and not a tiller, you may only use it for garden maintenance. For first-time tilling with hardened soils, look for a high-powered tiller, instead.

3. Features & Benefits of the Greenworks 40V Li-Ion Battery-Powered Cultivator

The Greenworks G-Max 40V Cultivator has a number of features you can easily love.

Lithium-Ion 40V, 4Ah Battery

As mentioned above, the Greenworks 27062 is powered by a 40V-Max, 4Ah G-Max Lithium-Ion battery. A Li-Ion battery is advantageous for a number of reasons, including the following:

• No trouble with “memory effect”.
• You don’t have to charge it overnight before first use.
• You can recharge it anytime.

Charging this battery to the full (from empty) can take up to 2 hours. You may find that a bit long, but you could always prepare some spare batteries in case you want to work non-stop. Or, you may take advantage of that charging time. Make it your resting period and that of the cultivator’s, too.

About 45 Minutes of Run Time

With the generous tilling width and depth that the Greenworks 27062 offers, 45 minutes of run time (for a full-charged battery) should not mean anything short. You may find that time sufficient for cultivating a 500 square-feet garden or more.

Four 8-Inch Rotating Tines

Tines that are 8 inches in diameter each can work together to aerate your garden soil. What’s interesting is that you may attach only two of these four tines. This would be beneficial if you’re working in a smaller garden area.

If you have rows of vegetables, for instance, and you want to weed out between those rows, a two-tined Greenworks 27062 may be a better fit.

Adjustable Tilling Width

If the area you’re working on is wide enough, and you want to get the job done fast, then just install all four tines. Having all four expands your tilling width.

Adjustable Tilling Depth

The Greenworks 40V Cordless Cultivator has a depth selector that enables you to dig up to 5 inches deep. You may, however, manually adjust the angle in which you push on the cultivator towards the soil, and consequently, adjust the depth.

Take note that a maximum depth of 5 inches is already generous for cultivation. For purposes of initial tilling, you may need tools that can dig up to 8 inches deep.

Lightweight

One advantage of electric, and especially, cordless cultivators, is that they’re generally lightweight and of course, portable. This means you need not worry if you’re a wife, mother, grandmother or even a young aspiring gardener who might find it a bit hard to carry around and much less handle a gardening machine.

The cultivator weighs about 21 pounds. Some cordless cultivators can weigh double that. For it’s weight and size, I think this 27062 Greenworks model should be great for enthusiasts of small space gardening.

Easy On The Hands with Foam Grip

With handles attached to the body, you can always readjust your grip on the Greenworks 27062 Cordless Cultivator. It also has a foam cover, so even if you don’t wear gloves, you should find the cultivator easy on the hands.

Not Much Maintenance Needed

Compared to gas-powered tillers, electric cultivators would not need much maintenance. Just be sure to clean it after every use. Let the tiller dry, take off the tines, and then the mud and weeds that are left should be easy to get rid of.

If you’re storing the cultivator for some time before using it again, you may want to detach the tines, clean them thoroughly, and spray them with oil.

It’s important to determine the tool that’s just right for the job. This user has found that the Greenworks 27062 Cordless Cultivator might be the best for her small garden—at least, so far in her experience. She only needs to take care of a small garden. The best cultivator tool for her didn’t happen to be the biggest or the most fanciful. It was just something that can handle her gardening needs.

Handy and Easy to Use

Just like User Angeline above, User Julie was looking for a small cultivator that was easy to use. Aside from saying almost the same things Angeline said, Julie also notes what I have pointed out earlier. The Greenworks 40V Cordless Cultivator is not a tiller, so you can’t expect it to work as a tiller. Know its limitations and use it according to what it’s designed for, and you’ll be satisfied. Just like Julie, especially in her routine garden maintenance.

Works Great If You Operate It Well

Here’s one user who chose to buy only the main machine. As he stated, he already has G-max batteries from other Greenworks products. Now he seems to have a ready lecture on how to install and release the battery. Apparently, you can avoid those crappy battery installation problems (that some users experience) if you only employ the techniques this user is explaining.

Powerful and Portable with the Wheels

This user says at least two positive things: the Greenworks 40V Battery-Powered Cultivator is powerful enough to handle a 300-square-feet garden, and it’s also very portable—thanks to its wheels. Now he mentions how he doesn’t like the handlebar’s height and angle, but it’s probably just because of his height, too. You won’t find a lot of comments about the handle’s height at Amazon, either. This man is giving the Greenworks 27062 a 5-star rating anyway, and that’s because the height problem was just subjective.

5. Alternatives to the Greenworks 40V Cordless Cultivator

Alternative products find their space here because I believe not a single size fits all—something that’s also true with garden cultivators. So, I’m listing three products here: the first two are cordless; the third one, corded.

• Black+Decker LGC120 20-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Garden Cultivator/Tiller
• Sun Joe TJ604E 16-Inch 13.5 Amp Electric Garden Tiller/Cultivator

Earthwise TC70040 Cordless Electric Tiller/Cultivator

The Earthwise TC70040 is similarly priced with the Greenworks 27062. You’ll notice that the two have very similar specs, too. One notable difference, though, is the tilling depth. The Earthwise Tiller/Cultivator is quite true to its name—it can act as a tiller other than just a cultivator. This electric tiller has the capacity to till up to 8 inches in depth.

Still, Greenworks offers the unusual perk. Its warranty period is double the industry standard, including that of Earthwise.

Black+Decker LGC120 20-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Garden Cultivator/Tiller

Black & Decker’s LGC120 Cordless Garden Cultivator offers half of what the Greenworks 27062 gives—well, in almost all specs. If you want to spare some bucks on your cultivator, you may opt for this alternative.

Just one word of advice. If the Greenworks 27062 is not even meant for tilling, I guess the Black+Decker LGC120 just suffers from a misnomer—especially the “tiller” part of its name. Use it only for small garden cultivation, and it’s probably good to go.

Sun Joe TJ604E 16-Inch 13.5 Amp Electric Garden Tiller/Cultivator

If you’re still hesitant about battery-powered cultivators, Sun Joe has an attractive offer. Of course, that requires you to consider using an extension cord especially if you’re away from an outlet, or if your plantation happens to be just quite vast.

The Sun Joe TJ604E is also a tiller, which most likely explains the 8” tilling depth and 16” tilling width it offers. If you’re looking to work a vast field and prepare it for plantation, this might be the tool for you.

Conclusion: The Greenworks 27062 40V Cordless Cultivator May Be the Best Cultivator Tool for Your Small Garden

At this point, you would have seen how not every product is for everyone. Small and large gardens have similarities. But, when it comes to garden tools, size often matters. The Greenworks 27062 40V Li-Ion Cordless Cultivator may be the best garden cultivator for small to medium-sized gardens; but, still, it’s not for everyone.

If you do square-foot gardening, this Greenworks Battery-Powered Cultivator can be a dependable and handy assistant. Remember that it is meant for cultivation, i.e., routine garden maintenance, and not initial tilling. Also, it’s ideal for hobbyists and small backyard gardeners who love using a portable, lightweight, and environment-friendly tool.
